Unfortunately, more and more people are suffering and being diagnosed with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, commonly known as PTSD.  Whether from combat or from childhood trauma, PTSD is a terrible thing to struggle with.  Luckily, science is a wonderful thing and in recent years more and more effective treatments are emerging.  Prolonged exposure is one of them.  I have been treating people with this technique for over 5 years, and I have to say while hearing the stories are horrendous, it is one of my favorite things to do.  The outcome is incredible.  I have had clients literally stand taller and with confidence afterwards.  Things that were once triggers and had the potential to cause complete shut down become not even noticeable.  I got into this business to help people, and seeing the results this treatment yields has been more than rewarding.

Prolonged exposure is a treatment option I offer to clients once we have been working together in individual therapy or DBT for a while.  In the case of DBT, it is close to a year before this treatment is appropriate.  This is due to the intense nature of the therapy, and the memories/trauma that will resurface and be focused on.  Prolonged exposure sessions are weekly and 90 minutes in length with 45 minutes of the time dedicated to the client retelling the most traumatic memory they have. Time is spent before this processing the previous week’s homework and then time after is spent processing those 45 minutes and assigning new homework.
